Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan visited flood-affected areas in Punjab on Thursday, September 4, 2025. During his visit, he interacted with farmers and examined the extensive crop damage caused by overflowing rivers. The Minister visited Ghonewal village in Amritsar, Begowal in Kapurthala, and Dharamkot Randhawa and Behrampur villages in Gurdaspur, stepping into waterlogged fields to witness the devastation firsthand.
Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria also met Chouhan at Amritsar airport and handed over a detailed report on the floods. Addressing the situation on the ground, Union Minister described the crisis as “dreadful,” with over 1,400 villages affected and crops completely destroyed.
“Floodwater has inundated the fields since August 26. The water of Ravi river is still flowing into the fields, leaving only silt underfoot. Crops have been entirely destroyed, and the next sowing is also at risk. The pain and loss cannot be estimated. But the government is with the farmers, and we will ensure complete relief,” Chouhan said.
Chouhan informed that, following instructions from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Central Government has sent two high-level teams to Punjab to assess the flood situation.
These teams, comprising officers from the Ministries of Agriculture, Rural Development, Roads, Energy, Finance, and Jal Shakti, will visit affected villages, interact with residents, and submit detailed reports to the Prime Minister. The state government will also carry out its own assessment to understand the extent of damage.
Highlighting Punjab’s resilience, Union Minister said the state has always stood as a shield of the nation during times of crisis. “I have come here on the instructions of Prime Minister. In this hour of distress, the government stands firmly with Punjab and its farmers. Every effort will be made to bring them out of this disaster,” he added.
