“With the properly skilled manpower, I am sure farmer’s income will double. It is very important for Indian farmers to adopt natural and organic farming instead of using chemicals to make agriculture not just profitable but also sustainable,” said Prof. Madaswamy Moni, Ex-Director General of the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and Professor Emeritus at Shobhit Institute of Engineering and Technology, speaking about how farmers’ income can be doubled.
“When the govt announced the committee report for doubling farmers’ income, I was invited as a chief advisor for the Department of Agriculture & Farmer’s Welfare and was associated with the doubling farmer’s income committee to use science and digital technology in doubling farmers income,” Prof Moni continued.
Speaking about his journey in the agriculture sector, Prof Moni, the founder of the District Information System Programme of NIC (DISNIC) said, “The DISNIC was implemented in more than 520 districts in India during the 1980s and covered 28 development sectors including agriculture, livestock, fisheries, irrigation, health, education, and industries.”
Prof Moni has played a significant role in the establishment of the GRID (Grass Root Informatics Development) Project, SMART VILLAGE Project, SMART ISLAND Project, and development schemes under the Eleventh Plan (2007–12) of the National Informatics Centre (NIC). He has also contributed to the conceptualization of NADRS (National Animal Disease Reporting System) initiatives, implemented in roughly 7032 places to improve the government's system for tracking and detecting animal diseases.
