"Prices of onion and pulses will not rise till December because we have enough buffer stock available with us," said Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh.
Not only onion,prices of pulses are also likely to remain stable till December, PTI reported quoting Singh.
He further said that 45 percent of onion is produced during the Kharif (summer) season while the remaining 65% is produced in the rabi (winter) season.
It is important to note that this year's onion prices have remained stable owing to record-breaking production in the rabi season of 2021–2022, as well as 2.5 lakh tonnes of buffer stock.
According to Singh, the government has acquired sufficient supply through Nafed, which is being distributed into the market in accordance with demand.
In addition, buffer-stock onions are made available anytime when prices in a particular area go up. "We usually supply when the costs are higher than the national average. We are expecting that there won't be any concerns until December," he added
As for pulses, Singh said that the government has a stock of 43.82 lakh tonnes (all pulses combined). This is more than enough to keep the markets stable, he insisted.
In addition, the government is providing onion to all states and UTs as well as Mother Dairy, Safal, NCCF, and Kendriya Bhandar for them to purchase onion from the Central Buffer Stock at a price of Rs 800 per quintal. It said that this has contributed to the stability of retail pricing.
Singh stated that the government has a stock of 43.82 lakh tonnes of pulses claiming that this would be more than enough to keep the markets steady.
