The Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) has achieved a significant milestone, reaching sales worth Rs. 1000 crores in October 2024. This feat marks a notable improvement from the previous year, when the same target was met in December 2023, demonstrating the growing reliance of the public on affordable, high-quality medicines. The initiative has gained widespread acceptance, with citizens showing their support by purchasing medicines from over 14,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras spread across the nation.
This surge in sales is a testament to the unwavering commitment of the Pharmaceuticals & Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI) to making healthcare accessible and affordable for everyone, reducing the out-of-pocket expenditure on medicines. Notably, PMBI also recorded sales worth Rs. 200 crores in a single month in September 2024, reflecting the expanding reach of the program.
Since its inception, PMBJP has witnessed remarkable growth. From just 80 Kendras in 2014, the initiative now boasts over 14,000 Kendras in nearly every district across the country—a growth of more than 170 times in the last decade. With ambitious plans to expand further, the government aims to establish 25,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras over the next two years.
PMBJP offers an extensive range of products, with a basket of 2,047 medicines and 300 surgical devices. These products cater to major therapeutic needs, including cardiovascular, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, anti-infective, gastrointestinal, and nutraceutical categories. The Jan Aushadhi Kendras have become a crucial lifeline for citizens, with nearly 1 million people visiting these people-friendly outlets daily.
