The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a total outlay of Rs 6,520 crore for the ongoing Central Sector Scheme Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana (PMKSY) for the 15th Finance Commission Cycle spanning 2021-22 to 2025-26. This includes an additional allocation of Rs 1,920 crore to strengthen key components under the scheme.

A key highlight of this approval is a Rs 1,000 crore investment earmarked for the development of 50 Multi-Product Food Irradiation Units under the Integrated Cold Chain and Value Addition Infrastructure (ICCVAI) scheme, as well as the establishment of 100 NABL-accredited Food Testing Laboratories (FTLs) through the Food Safety and Quality Assurance Infrastructure (FSQAI) component.

These initiatives are in line with the government’s focus on food safety, preservation, and value addition in the food processing sector. Both ICCVAI and FSQAI are demand-driven schemes, and Expressions of Interest (EOIs) will soon be invited from eligible entities nationwide. Submitted proposals will be assessed and approved based on eligibility criteria outlined in the respective scheme guidelines.

The planned 50 food irradiation units are expected to enhance food preservation capacity by approximately 20 to 30 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) annually, depending on the types of products treated. Irradiation helps extend shelf life and reduce spoilage, which is especially critical for perishable goods.

Additionally, the 100 proposed food testing labs, to be established primarily through private investment, will help build robust infrastructure for ensuring food safety and quality. These laboratories will enable accurate and timely testing of food samples, thereby supporting regulatory compliance and enhancing consumer trust.

An additional Rs 920 crore will support the implementation of various component schemes under PMKSY during the current Finance Commission period. The move aims to bolster the food processing ecosystem, encourage private sector participation, and ensure safe, quality-assured food reaches consumers across India.
