Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Monday, August 11, 2025, digitally transferred Rs 3,900 crore in crop insurance payouts under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) directly into the bank accounts of nearly 35 lakh farmers.
The event, held in Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan, was attended by Minister of State for Agriculture Bhagirath Choudhary, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, Rajasthan Agriculture Minister Dr. Kirodi Lal Meena, and lakhs of farmers, with many joining virtually from across the country.
Calling it a significant milestone for farmers, Chouhan praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, saying it has shaped a remarkable and self-reliant India. He announced that Rajasthan will soon benefit from water supply projects involving the Yamuna, Chambal, and Indus rivers.
He pointed out that under earlier insurance rules, payouts were made only if an entire tehsil or block suffered crop loss, but under PMFBY, even a single farmer’s loss in a village is eligible for compensation. Since the launch of the scheme in 2016, Rs 2.12 lakh crore has been disbursed to farmers.
Recalling India’s firm response to the Pahalgam terror attack through ‘Operation Sindoor’, he said the action was taken solely by India without third-party involvement, ending only after Pakistan bowed before the nation’s might.
Union Minister also highlighted PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana, which has transferred Rs 3.75 lakh crore directly to farmers, and substantial fertiliser subsidies that keep prices affordable, with urea sold at Rs 266 per 45-kg bag instead of its actual price of Rs 1,633.24. Similarly, DAP fertiliser is priced at Rs 1,350 for a 50-kg bag against its market cost of Rs 3,100. So far, the government has provided Rs 14.06 lakh crore to fertiliser companies to maintain this price support.
Chouhan underlined the government’s MSP policy, ensuring rates are fixed at least 50% above production costs. He said the government has set moong procurement at Rs 2,000 per quintal and disbursed Rs 43.87 lakh crore under the PM-AASHA scheme for wheat and paddy procurement. Market Intervention Scheme, he added, allows farmers to sell their produce in other states with transport costs covered by the government.
On challenges facing agriculture, the Union Minister announced that work is underway on a stringent law to punish those involved in counterfeit fertiliser production and sales. He assured that in case of crop virus outbreaks, farmers can inform authorities or even send photos, and scientists will be dispatched immediately to affected villages.
Under Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan, teams will visit villages after the Kharif season to prepare for Rabi crops and promote high-quality seeds for moong, urad, soybean, and millets.
Chouhan also urged citizens to adopt Swadeshi products to strengthen local economies and boost the livelihoods of small artisans and entrepreneurs, calling it essential for building a self-reliant India.
