On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Tamil Nadu farmers for record production of food grain and urged them to recall the 'per drop more crop' slogan saying that this would benefit future generations.
The Prime Minister said, 'I want to thank Tamil Nadu farmers for record production of food grain and successful use of water supplies during the inauguration and foundation stone laying ceremony of many main projects in Chennai. This Anicut Canal has been a lifeline to the rice bowl for thousands of years. The Grand Anicut is a living testament of our glorious history.’
‘We are launching core infrastructure projects from Chennai today that are icons of creativity and indigenous growth. These projects would further Tamil Nadu's growth,' he said. This initiative is unique because we are setting the groundwork for the modernization of the 636 kilometer long Anicut Canal. The effect would be really good. Irrigation services for 2.27 lakh acres of land will be enhanced. Tanjore and Pudhukottai districts would benefit from this,’ he said.
PM Modi, quoting words from famous Tamil poet Avvaiyar, said: ‘When the level of water increases, agriculture rises, people flourish and the state thrives. For water protection, we have to do everything we can do. Not only is this a national problem. It is a topic that is global. Always recall the slogan of per drop more crops. This will benefit future generations.’
The Prime Minister has shared his warm welcome to the people of Chennai. ‘I am thankful to the Chennai people for the warm welcome they gave me today. The town is packed with passion and excitement. He said that this is the city of knowledge and imagination.’
