Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his monthly Mann Ki Baat radio address on Sunday (October 26, 2025), lauded Koraput Coffee for its exquisite flavour and rich legacy, describing it as the “pride of Odisha.”“Some time ago, many people from Odisha wrote to me, requesting that Koraput Coffee be featured in Mann Ki Baat,” the Prime Minister said.

“You all know my association with tea, but today I thought, why not talk about coffee? I have been told that Koraput Coffee tastes amazing and is changing people’s lives,” he added.

PM Modi highlighted the inspiring stories of individuals from Koraput who left well-paying corporate jobs to follow their passion for coffee cultivation. Many women, too, have found empowerment and financial independence through coffee farming. “They have gained both respect and prosperity through coffee,” he said. Quoting a local saying, the Prime Minister remarked, “Koraput Coffee is truly delectable,  it is indeed the pride of Odisha.”

Koraput Coffee, grown in the lush hills of southern Odisha, is known for its rich aroma, bold flavour, and smooth finish. The region’s unique climatic conditions, coupled with the dedication of local tribal farmers, have given it a distinctive identity on India’s coffee map.

Coffee cultivation in Koraput began in the 1960s but gained commercial recognition only over the past fifteen years. It has since evolved into a sustainable source of livelihood for tribal communities, creating new avenues in rural development, eco-tourism, and local entrepreneurship.

The Prime Minister also spoke about the growing global recognition of Indian coffee, mentioning renowned coffee-producing regions such as Chikmagalur, Coorg, and Hassan in Karnataka; Nilgiri and Annamalai in Tamil Nadu; and Wayanad and Malabar in Kerala. He said India’s diverse coffee culture reflects both the nation’s agricultural richness and the entrepreneurial spirit of its people.

“Our North-East is also progressing in coffee cultivation,” PM Modi noted, adding that this expansion further strengthens India’s reputation as a premium coffee producer. “India’s coffee is coffee at its finest. It is brewed in India and loved by the world,” he concluded.
