The demise of Keshari Nath Tripathi, former governor of West Bengal who also served briefly as governor of Bihar, Meghalaya, and Mizoram, has left Prime Minister Narendra Modi inconsolable. PM Modi said that the latter was instrumental in the BJP's growth in Uttar Pradesh and had put in a lot of effort to advance the state.

In a recent tweet, PM Modi wrote, "Shri Keshari Nath Tripathi Ji was respected for his service and intellect. He was well-versed in Constitutional matters. He played a key role in building BJP in UP and worked hard for the state’s progress. Pained by his demise. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti."

Early on Sunday morning, Tripathi passed away at the age of 88 at his home in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

For the last few months, the three-time Speaker of the UP Legislative Assembly had been ill. He had fractured his hand on December 8 and was taken to the ICU of a private hospital on December 30 as he also experienced general weakness in addition to decreased oral intake and urine output.

The latter was taken home after receiving treatment at the hospital for a week, where he died at around 5 am, according to the reports.

Tripathi, a senior counsel in the Allahabad High Court, was a six-time legislator for the state of Uttar Pradesh. He served as the representative for Jhunsi from 1977 to 1980 and for Allahabad South for five terms in a row from 1989 to 2007. Between 1991 and 2004, he also held the office of Speaker of the UP Legislative Assembly three times.

Tripathi was appointed to lead West Bengal as governor on July 14, 2014. He also served as governor of Meghalaya and Mizoram in addition to twice serving as additional governor of Bihar.
