The Motera stadium in Ahmedabad is currently being revamped as it is all set to become the world’s largest cricket stadium. The 700 crore stadium was given a green signal at the beginning of 2017.
Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA), Vice-President Parimal Nathwani, has tweeted the stadiums first under construction pictures. However, the stadium will be built across 63 acres of land which will be bigger than the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The Motera stadium had a seating capacity of 49,000 and was built in 1982. Currently, the MCG holds a seating capacity of 90,000.
Interestingly, the stadium hosted its first Test in the year 1983, between India and the West Indies.
A renowned architecture firm, M/s Populous which also designed the Melbourne’s stadium is the in-charge of stadium design. Now there will be three practice grounds and indoor cricket. It will also have around 76 corporate boxes, four-group changing areas and offices, best in class club offices and an Olympic size swimming pool as well.
Talking about the parking lot, it will have the capacity to accommodate about 3,000 cars and up to 10,000 two-wheelers.
Before the construction started at the Motera stadium, it had hosted 23 ODIs. The stadium has also witnessed some historic moments, like former Indian batsman and skipper Sunil Gavaskar completing 10,000 runs in Tests.
Sachin Tendulkar scored his first double century in Tests against New Zealand in this stadium.
