Over Rs 11 lakh crore in loans have been disbursed to women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) across India under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM), Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.

Speaking about the success of DAY-NRLM, Union Minister highlighted how rural women are transforming their lives through SHGs, which provide collateral-free loans, interest subsidies, and other financial support. With a repayment rate exceeding 98%, the scheme stands as a model of financial discipline and effective grassroots implementation.

Chouhan acknowledged the vital role of the banking sector in this journey, especially the contributions of ‘Bank Sakhis’, trained women from within the SHGs, who bridge the gap between banks and rural communities. These grassroots financial agents assist with transactions, loan applications, and documentation, while also raising awareness about insurance, pensions, and other financial schemes.

According to the Minister, simplified banking procedures under priority sector lending have made it easier for SHG members to access credit and financial services. Efforts to link bank accounts with Aadhaar and mobile numbers have further improved transparency and operational ease. Additionally, the Community-Based Repayment Mechanism (CBRM) is being strengthened to ensure timely loan recovery and sustain the programme’s success.

Highlighting the broader impact, Chouhan stated that initiatives like DAY-NRLM and ‘Lakhpati Didi’ are enabling rural women to achieve financial independence and contribute significantly to the nation’s development. He described this achievement as more than just a statistic, it is a powerful reflection of what can be accomplished when women are given trust, opportunities, and the right support systems. Empowered women, he said, are driving transformational change not only within their households but across entire communities.

The DAY-NRLM, launched by the Ministry of Rural Development, continues to be one of the world’s largest poverty alleviation and financial inclusion initiatives, with women at its core.
