Bihar Agriculture Minister Dr Prem Kumar visited Sikkim to learn the state experiences to adopt the model in Bihar for the organic Farming. Dr Kumar also visited ICAR-National Organic Farming Research Institute, Tadong, to know more about the organic farming scientific methods adopted by the Sikkim.
Dr. Prem Kumar wanted to know from scientists at the institute the specific options available for the adoption of the Sikkim model in Bihar and instructed his officers for adoption of principles and practices of organic farming that had been followed by the ICAR-NOFRI in Sikkim for the promotion of organic farming in Bihar.
ICAR-National Organic Farming Research Institute, Tadong, They were interested in the management of pests and diseases though organic ways. Regarding the production of organic seed and organic nutrient management they were briefed by the scientists.
Organic farming, the brainchild of Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling, how has more takers. Bihar now wants to introduce organic farming, using the system of Sikkim as the model.
Bihar Agriculture Minister Dr. Prem Kumar, along with a high-level officers from the state, visited the ICAR-National Organic Farming Research Institute, Tadong, last week to know more about the Sikkim experience.
Joint Director ICAR–NOFRI R. K. Avasthe briefed the Bihar Minister about the benefits that the organic farming systems had brought to small and marginal farmers of Sikkim in livelihood and anso the importamnce of organic farming in ensuring nutritional security in the state.
He elaborated on the research, capacity buiding and skill development work undertaken by the ICAR–NOFRI and KVK, East Sikkim in the past five years with the aim to doubling the income of farmers by March 2022 through organic farming.
The team from Bihar was also briefed about the temperate fruits and low cost plastic tunnels and rain shelters for year-round organic vegetable production in Sikkim.
