NTPC announced plans to supply Green Hydrogen for blending in Gujarat Gas Ltd's (GGL) Piped Natural Gas (PNG) network at NTPC Kawas. Green hydrogen will be produced using electricity generated by NTPC Kawas' existing 1 MW floating solar project. This will be blended with PNG in a predetermined proportion and used for cooking purposes in NTPC Kawas Township.
"This hydrogen blending project at NTPC Kawas the country's first of its kind. It is a step toward decarbonization of the cooking sector and national self-sufficiency in energy," the company stated.
The initial percentage of hydrogen blending in PNG will be around 5%, and after successful completion, it will be increased further.
NTPC has 69 GW of installed capacity and a diverse fuel mix. The company intends to build 60 GW of renewable energy capacity over the next decade and is currently executing several pilot projects in the green hydrogen space.
GGL is India's largest City Gas Distribution (CGD) company, with operations in 43 districts across six states and one union territory.
