“The dragon fruit renamed as Kamalam in Gujrat as it is shaped like a lotus, and most importantly the original name is associated with China”, said Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.
Rupani also mentioned that the decision was taken keeping in mind the outer shape of the fruit, it resembles the lotus and the word dragon for the fruit sounded inappropriate. He added that, “the name dragon fruit is associated with China and we have changed it.”
Applied for the Patent
“We have applied for the patent of the dragon fruit to be called Kamalam. But as of now, we the Gujrat government have decided to call the fruit as Kamalam,” said CM Rupani while interacting with the media during the launch of the Chief Minister Horticulture Development Mission. The fruit is native of and mostly grown in South America, but is now grown in several places.
And, he also added that there is nothing political in this.
Aatmanirbhar Bharat
PM Modi in July 2020 mentioned the fruit in his radio show Mann ki Baat and listed the nutritional benefits of the fruit, and has also given the shout-out to the farmers growing this fruit in India as a part of the mission Aatmanirbhar Bharat, which is mostly imported from South America.
One more thing to note is that, lotus is the symbol of BJP and the Gujrat BJP headquarters in Gandhinagar is also named “Shri Kamalam”.
