The Ganga Water Supply project, developed by the Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd., is a remarkable drinking water project that uses floodwater from the Ganga River as part of Bihar's Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali initiative.
Following the inauguration, the chief minister stated that the project was created with consideration for the needs of the four towns in southern Bihar over the next 50 years.
According to the project, each Rajgir home will receive 135 liters per person.
“It should be sufficient. As I observe the effects of this project, I'll make plans for Patna, which is situated along the banks of the Ganga River. Ganga water will eventually get to Nawada as well. In order to address the region's drinking water problems, all four of the south Bihar towns will conserve Ganga water during the flood season,” added the chief minister.
Nitish urged residents to use the clean water supply, saying they could now quit using borewells because they would receive Gangajal from their taps.
“You can drink and also take bath in Gangajal daily. Additionally, it will reach Nalanda University and all of the temples. Also, this initiative will help in recharging groundwater for agricultural use. I have done a lot for Rajgir, and I also have plans to build the Jarasandh Memorial, which will be close to the Jarasandh ka Akhara.
"Floodwater would be lifted using pumps at Hathidah and transported along a 151-kilometer pipeline to three gigantic reservoirs in Rajgir, Tetar, and Gaya," according to Sanjay Kumar Jha, minister of water resources, of the project.
The minister added, "These three south Bihar cities of Rajgir, Gaya, and Bodh Gaya have been experiencing water shortages due to excessive borewell drilling. Water from the reservoirs will travel to two WTP, where it is treated and transported to the "enlightenment" cities. Nitish Kumar has been involved with this historic day for Bihar from its concept through its implementation. The undertaking is proof of his vision and dedication to improving people's lives."
“The GWSS was a tribute to the vision of Nitish Kumar, whose actions speak louder than words and achieve the improbable," deputy chief minister Tejaswhi Yadav said in a welcome statement to the chief minister.
According to state finance minister Vijay Kunar Choudhary, Nitish Kumar accomplished what most people could not even imagine by bringing Ganga water to the people.
Manoj Bajpayee, a well-known Bollywood actor, also gave a thorough presentation about the project, its execution, and its effects at the event through a documentary.
Built at a cost of ₹4,500 crores, the project will ensure drinking water to over 40-lakh population in the water-alarmed southern part of the state. The project, originally known as the Ganga water lift project, was approved in December 2019.
