NIRF Ranking 2025: IIT Madras Tops Overall List, IISc Bengaluru and IIT Bombay Follow; Check Full List Here

Ministry of Education has released the NIRF Rankings 2025, with IIT Madras securing the top spot in the overall category. IISc Bengaluru and IIT Bombay have followed in second and third positions respectively.

NIRF Ranking 2025: Ministry of Education has announced National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Rankings 2025 today (September 04, 2025) marking the 10th edition of the country’s most trusted higher education assessment system. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan released the rankings at a special event held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.

NIRF rankings, published at nirfindia.org, serve as a valuable guide for students, parents, and policymakers by evaluating institutions across multiple categories. This year, rankings were released in 17 categories, including Overall, Universities, Colleges, Engineering, Medical, Law, Research Institutions, and new additions such as Skill Universities and a dedicated Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) category. The inclusion of the SDG ranking reflects the rising importance of sustainability and social impact in education.

Once again, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras secured the top position, reaffirming its reputation as the country’s leading institution. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru and IIT Bombay followed at second and third place, respectively.

Ranking Parameters

The framework evaluates institutions on five key parameters:

  • Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR)

  • Research & Professional Practice (RPC)

  • Graduation Outcome (GO)

  • Outreach & Inclusivity (OI)

  • Peer Perception

These parameters ensure a holistic assessment of teaching quality, research output, student success, inclusivity, and reputation.

First introduced in 2015 by Ministry of Human Resource Development, the NIRF has since become the benchmark for higher education rankings in India. The 2025 edition highlights not only academic excellence but also the increasing role of universities in contributing to sustainability and societal goals.
