
National Sports Day 2025: India celebrates National Sports Day on August 29 every year to honour the legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, famously known as the "Wizard of Hockey." First observed in 2012, the day not only commemorates Major Dhyan Chand’s contribution to Indian sports but also highlights the role of sports in promoting unity and excellence. This year, the theme for National Sports Day is “Sport to Promote Peaceful and Inclusive Societies,” emphasizing the power of sports to bring people together and foster harmony.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his warm greetings to the nation on this occasion, reflecting on India’s growing achievements in sports. In a message posted on X, he said, “Greetings on National Sports Day! On this special occasion, we pay tribute to Major Dhyan Chand Ji, whose excellence continues to inspire generations.” The Prime Minister highlighted the transformation in India’s sports ecosystem over the last decade, from grassroots programs nurturing young talent to world-class facilities and expanded opportunities for athletes nationwide.
PM Modi reaffirmed government’s commitment to promoting sports and fitness, strengthening support for athletes, and making India a global hub for sporting excellence. “Our government remains committed to supporting athletes, building infrastructure, and creating opportunities for sporting talent across the country,” he added.
Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Minister of Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, also paid tribute to Major Dhyan Chand on his birth anniversary. Posting on X, he said, “On the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand ji, the wizard of hockey who brought global recognition to India in hockey, countless salutations. Heartiest congratulations and best wishes to all players and sports enthusiasts on National Sports Day!”
