On November 26, 2024, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) will celebrate "National Milk Day" at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi, commemorating the 103rd birth anniversary of Dr. Verghese Kurien. Known as the "Father of the White Revolution," Dr. Kurien's contributions to the dairy sector have been instrumental in shaping India's position as the world's largest producer of milk. This significant event will be attended by Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, along with Ministers of State Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel and George Kurian, as well as other dignitaries.

One of the highlights of the celebration will be the presentation of the prestigious National Gopal Ratna Awards, which recognize excellence in the dairy and livestock sector. These awards will be presented in three categories: Best Dairy Farmer for rearing indigenous cattle or buffalo breeds, Best Artificial Insemination Technician, and Best Dairy Cooperative Society, Milk Producer Company, or Dairy Farmer Producer Organization. Special awards will also be conferred to winners from the North Eastern Region. Some awardees will also share their insights into best practices and innovations that have shaped their success in the sector.

In addition, two important publications will be launched. The Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics (BAHS) 2023 will provide crucial data on trends in livestock and dairy sectors, aiding informed policymaking. The Manual on the Identification of Elite Cows will guide the creation of a national herd of elite dairy animals, underscoring the role of technological advancement in improving animal husbandry.

Another key aspect of the event will be the culmination of the All India Motor Rally, organized by Amul and Bajaj Auto. The rally, which began in Gujarat, will arrive in New Delhi as a symbol of the nation’s unity and dedication to dairy development.

The celebration will also feature two impactful panel discussions. The first, "Women Led Livestock and Dairy Sector," will focus on the role of women in transforming the industry, while the second, "Empowering Farmers through Local Veterinary Support," will explore how strengthening local veterinary systems can improve farmers' livelihoods.

National Milk Day 2024 highlights India's leadership in the global dairy sector, celebrates the hard work of dairy farmers, and promotes sustainable growth in the industry.
