Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new campus of Nalanda University at Rajgir, Bihar, marking a significant milestone in India's educational and cultural revival. The University, established as a collaborative effort between India and East Asia Summit (EAS) countries, saw attendance from several eminent dignitaries, including Heads of Missions from 17 countries. During the ceremony, the Prime Minister also planted a sapling, symbolizing growth and sustainability.
In his address, Prime Minister Modi expressed his delight in visiting Nalanda within ten days of taking oath for his third term. He highlighted that Nalanda is more than just a name; it is a symbol of indestructible knowledge and an embodiment of India’s rich educational heritage. “Nalanda is the root, it is the mantra,” he stated, highlighting the University’s pivotal role in India’s developmental journey and the ushering in of a new golden age.
The Prime Minister underscored the global significance of Nalanda, noting its heritage shared with the world, particularly Asia. He acknowledged the contributions of friendly nations to the Nalanda project and praised the people of Bihar for their determination to revive its historic glory. Modi stressed that the revival of Nalanda University near its ancient ruins would introduce India’s capabilities to the world, showcasing that nations with strong human values can create a better future by rejuvenating their history.
Reflecting on Nalanda's historical role as a living center of India’s culture and traditions, the Prime Minister pointed out that the term Nalanda signifies a continuous flow of knowledge and education—an approach that has long been integral to India. He highlighted that ancient Nalanda University admitted students irrespective of their identities and nationalities, a tradition that continues today with students from over 20 countries already studying at the new campus, exemplifying the concept of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (the world is one family).
Prime Minister Modi also spoke about India’s tradition of treating education as a tool for human welfare. He mentioned the upcoming International Yoga Day, illustrating how India has shared Yoga and Ayurveda with the world. Emphasizing sustainability, he noted that the new Nalanda campus follows a pioneering Net Zero Energy, Net Zero Emission, Net Zero Water, and Net Zero Waste model, reflecting India’s commitment to progress and environmental harmony.
Highlighting the link between education and economic-cultural roots, the Prime Minister outlined India’s mission to become a global center of education and knowledge by 2047. He mentioned various initiatives, including Atal Tinkering Labs, Chandrayaan and Gaganyaan missions, and Startup India, which have significantly boosted interest in science and innovation. He also cited improvements in global rankings of Indian universities, the establishment of numerous educational institutions, and the introduction of the New Educational Policy.
The Prime Minister expressed optimism that Nalanda’s knowledge would guide humanity and that its students and scholars, representing the future of India, would carry forward the university's values. He encouraged them to be curious, courageous, and kind, working towards positive societal change.
Concluding his speech, Prime Minister Modi conveyed his belief that Nalanda would become a crucial center for global causes, shaping the next generation of leaders and thinkers. The inauguration was attended by Bihar Governor Rajendra Arlekar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Union Ministers Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Pabitra Margherita, Deputy Chief Ministers Vijay Kumar Sinha and Samrat Choudary, Nalanda University Chancellor Prof. Arvind Panagariya, and Vice-Chancellor Prof. Abhay Kumar Singh, among other dignitaries.
