Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings to residents living in Mumbai, Thane and Satara as heavy rains lashed across the region. According to IMD’s district forecast, Mumbai, Thane and Palghar are very likely to get heavy rains at isolated places from Thursday to Saturday. “Intense clouds in Mumbai and around as seen from the radar and latest satellite images. South Konkan, too, is covered by clouds,” said KS Hosalikar, Deputy Director General (Western Region), IMD.
On Monday, the areas that reported maximum rain were Borivli at 48.52mm, Kandivli 39.6mm and Malwani in Malad 36.82mm. While the Santacruz weather station, representative of Mumbai’s suburbs reported 30.2 mm rainfall, while the Colaba bureau, representative of the island city, recorded 13.4 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Tuesday.
Private weather forecaster Skymet has released its set of predictions for rainfall in the country for the next three days. Mumbai will likely receive good showers during this time. According to Skymet, the month of July is the rainiest month for Mumbai with an average rainfall of 841mm. It is not at all rare for Mumbai to score 100mm or more in 24 hours for three consecutive days.
According to the IMD, Mumbai city has received 928 mm rainfall this monsoon season so far, which is 26 per cent more than normal at this time of the year. It rained heavily in Matheran hill station and neighbouring Raigad received 93 mm rainfall in the 24 hours. Thane weather office also recorded 74 mm rainfall, the IMD said told news agency PTI.
