On Wednesday, Mumbai experienced relentless and intense showers, leading to the city recording its highest rainfall for the month of July. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the total rainfall so far in July reached a record-breaking 1557.8 mm. The previous highest July rainfall on record was in 2020, when the IMD's Santacruz observatory, representing Mumbai's suburbs, recorded 1502 mm of rainfall.
As per the media reports, as of 8:30 am on July 26, 2023, the Santacruz observatory had already registered 1433 mm of rainfall for the period from July 1 to July 26. The record for the wettest July was broken later that same day at 8:30 pm, with the observatory's total rainfall reaching 1557.8 mm.

Throughout the day, Mumbai experienced continuous heavy rains, prompting the weather office to upgrade the alert level from 'orange' to 'red' starting from Wednesday night until Thursday afternoon. The 'red' alert signifies the prediction of heavy to very heavy rainfall at some places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations, valid from 8 pm on Wednesday until the afternoon of July 27, covering both Mumbai city and suburban areas says media reports.

On Wednesday, Mumbai experienced heavy and continuous rainfall, leading the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to raise the alert level from 'orange' to 'red' for the city and surrounding areas. The average rainfall recorded in Mumbai was 101.35 mm, with 87.54 mm in the eastern suburbs and 102.55 mm in the western suburbs. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) declared a holiday for all schools and colleges on July 27 due to the expected heavy rainfall, and the University of Mumbai cancelled all Thursday examinations. Road traffic was affected, but local train services continued normally. The Andheri subway faced intermittent closures due to waterlogging.
As a result of the intense rainfall, Mumbai registered its wettest July on record, with a total of 1557.8 mm of rainfall. The record was broken at 8:30 pm on July 26, surpassing the previous highest record of 1433 mm between July 1 and July 26, 2023.
