Mumbai Weather: Mumbai woke up to another wet morning on Tuesday, as heavy rains pounded the city and its suburbs for the second consecutive day. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for Mumbai, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall and advising residents to avoid flood-prone and low-lying areas.
Several neighbouring districts were also placed under varying levels of weather alerts. Raigad and Mumbai Suburban were placed under a Red Alert for extremely heavy rainfall, while Thane and Pune were issued an Orange Alert. Palghar was under a Yellow Alert, indicating relatively lighter but still significant rainfall activity.
The intense downpour led to widespread disruptions across the city, especially in daily commutes and travel plans. Several airlines, including IndiGo, issued advisories urging passengers to allow extra time for travel due to waterlogged roads and slow-moving traffic. "There's a heavy downpour over #Mumbai at the moment, causing temporary disruption to flight schedules," IndiGo posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Mumbai Weather Forecast
According to the IMD, Mumbai and surrounding areas are likely to experience moderate to heavy rainfall over the next four days. Short-term forecasts also suggest thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in parts of Mumbai and Thane in the coming hours. On Tuesday, Colaba recorded 12.2 mm of rainfall, while Santacruz received 38.2 mm. The city’s maximum temperature hovered around 25°C.
In response to the Red Alert in Raigad district, authorities declared a holiday for schools in the talukas of Tala, Roha, Pali, Mahad, Poladpur, and Mangaon as a precautionary measure.
Despite the disruptions, the rainfall brought some relief in terms of water supply. According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, Mumbai’s water reservoirs are now 78.3% full. Modak Sagar has reached full capacity, while Middle Vaitarna and Tansa are at 94.16% and 84.41%, respectively. These lakes, along with Bhatsa and Upper Vaitarna, are essential to Mumbai’s daily water supply.
IMD has urged residents to stay alert and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in flood-prone zones. Fisherfolk and those living near the coastline have been advised to follow all safety guidelines, as intense rainfall and rough sea conditions are expected to continue.
