Heavy rain lashed Mumbai early Monday morning, starting around 3 am, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more rain throughout the day. The weather office said the city will have a cloudy sky with heavy showers, and temperatures will stay between 24°C and 31°C.
Several areas in Mumbai are on red alert, including Borivali, Santacruz, Powai, Mulund, Chembur, Worli, Colaba, and Alibag. This means very heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected in these parts. Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Kalyan are on orange alert, warning of heavy rainfall and possible flooding.
Nearby districts are also on alert. Raigad is under a red warning, while Thane and Palghar are under orange. The IMD said strong winds and thunderstorms are likely in these areas today.
The rain is being caused by a low-pressure system over south Madhya Maharashtra and nearby regions. It is expected to move eastward and slowly weaken, but not before bringing more showers to parts of Maharashtra, including Konkan and Goa, until May 27.
The southwest monsoon has also arrived early in Maharashtra, the earliest in 35 years, and is expected to reach Mumbai in the next few days, much before the usual date of June 11.
