Mumbai is expected to experience light to moderate rainfall over the next few days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast issued today, May 9, 2025. This weather is likely to be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching up to 50 kmph, bringing a temporary break from the heat but also raising the possibility of localised disruptions.
The weather activity is a result of multiple cyclonic circulations and troughs spanning across central and western India, including parts of Maharashtra.
In the past 24 hours, regions of Madhya Maharashtra and the Konkan & Goa area, where Mumbai is located, have experienced gusty winds of 30-60 kmph along with thunderstorms. The IMD has indicated that this pattern is likely to continue until May 11, with isolated rainfall and thunderstorm events expected across western India, including the Mumbai region.
Additionally, a gradual rise in maximum temperatures of 2-4°C is anticipated across Maharashtra in the coming days. This means that while the showers may provide brief relief, hot and humid conditions could continue.
Currently, maximum temperatures in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra have been slightly below normal due to recent cloud cover and rainfall, but this trend may reverse as temperatures are expected to rise as the week progresses.
Residents of Mumbai are advised to stay alert for sudden thunderstorms, strong winds, and lightning, particularly during the evening hours. These weather conditions can result in falling tree branches, temporary power outages, and minor flooding in low-lying areas. The IMD also recommends precautions such as avoiding shelter under trees, unplugging electrical appliances during storms, and staying indoors whenever possible.
As the southwest monsoon is expected to advance into the Andaman Sea around May 13, Mumbai's pre-monsoon weather is beginning to show signs of transition. With variable rainfall and increasing humidity, the city may soon enter its familiar wet season.
