Muharram is the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar. It is one of the four sacred months in Islam. The word "Muharram" means "forbidden," and it is considered a holy time during which fighting and war are discouraged. Muslims across the world begin their new Islamic year with this month.

Muharram is not just the start of a new year, it is also a time of deep spiritual reflection, remembrance, and mourning, especially for the Shia Muslim community.

Muharram 2025 Date in India

Muharram 2025 is expected to begin in India on June 26 or June 27, depending on the sighting of the moon.

The most important day of this month is the 10th day, known as Ashura, which is expected to fall on Sunday, July 6, 2025. The Islamic calendar is based on the lunar cycle, so dates may vary slightly in different regions.

Why is Muharram Important?

  1. Beginning of the Islamic New Year: Just like people celebrate January 1st as the start of a new year in the Gregorian calendar, the 1st of Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic year. It is a time when Muslims set spiritual goals and renew their faith.

  2. Mourning for Imam Hussain: For Shia Muslims, Muharram is a time of mourning the death of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad. He was killed on the 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, in the Battle of Karbala in the year 680 CE. Imam Hussain and his companions were killed because they stood up against a corrupt ruler. His sacrifice is seen as a symbol of justice, truth, and courage. Shia Muslims remember this tragic event with deep sorrow and honor Hussain's message of standing up for what is right.

  3. Fasting and Prayer for Sunni Muslims: Many Sunni Muslims fast during Muharram, especially on the 9th and 10th or the 10th and 11th of the month. Fasting on the day of Ashura is believed to bring great rewards and forgiveness.

It is also a time for offering prayers, helping the poor, and engaging in acts of kindness and peace.

Rituals and Observances During Muharram

For Shia Muslims:

  • Majlis (gatherings): Special gatherings are held where scholars and speakers talk about the life of Imam Hussain and the events of Karbala.

  • Matam (mourning): Some communities take part in chest-beating and processions as an expression of grief.

  • Taziyas: These are artistic models of Imam Hussain’s tomb, carried in processions and later buried or immersed in water.

  • Black Clothing: Many wear black to express sorrow.

For Sunni Muslims:

  • Fasting: It is common to fast on the 10th day of Muharram (Ashura), and many also fast a day before or after.

  • Charity: Giving food, money, or clothes to the poor is encouraged.

  • Prayer and Reflection: People spend time in prayer and remember the blessings and trials from Islamic history.

Muharram and the Story of Karbala

The Battle of Karbala is central to the meaning of Muharram. Imam Hussain, along with 72 of his family members and supporters, refused to accept the rule of Yazid, a ruler they believed was unjust. Despite being outnumbered and cut off from food and water, Hussain and his group stood firm.

On the 10th of Muharram, Imam Hussain was martyred, and his family members were taken captive. This tragic event is remembered every year with sadness and respect.

The story of Karbala teaches the importance of:

  1. Standing up against injustice

  2. Courage in the face of danger

  3. Sacrifice for truth and religion

Is Muharram a Festival?

Unlike most festivals, Muharram is not a celebration. It is a time of mourning, fasting, and reflection. There are no joyful parties or decorations. Instead, people spend time remembering the past, attending religious gatherings, and thinking about the values of truth, sacrifice, and justice.
