Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the M.S. Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi on August 7, 2025, marking the birth centenary of the legendary agricultural scientist who transformed India’s food security landscape.

Organised by the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) in collaboration with Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), and National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS), the three-day event will honour Prof. Swaminathan’s lifelong contributions to sustainable and equitable development.

During the inauguration, Prime Minister will also release a commemorative coin and postage stamp issued by the Government of India in honour of the pioneering scientist.

Themed “Evergreen Revolution – The Pathway to Bio happiness”, the conference aims to carry forward Prof. Swaminathan’s mission of sustainable agriculture and inclusive food security. It also seeks to frame a future roadmap for Indian agriculture with a special emphasis on enhancing women's participation in the sector.

Announcing the event at a press conference, Dr. M.L. Jat, Secretary (DARE) and Director General (ICAR), described Prof. Swaminathan as a brave son of India whose revolutionary leadership in agriculture reshaped the country’s green landscape. He noted that the conference will be a platform to advance Prof. Swaminathan’s vision in today’s agricultural context.

Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, Chair of MSSRF, underscored the global significance of the event and its role in shaping the future of sustainable agriculture.

Dr. C. Viswanathan, Joint Director (Research), ICAR-IARI, reflected on Prof. Swaminathan’s transformative impact on Indian agriculture. Dr. Ashok Singh, Secretary, NAAS, stated, “Food is God to the hungry, and Prof. Swaminathan has been that god for millions.”

The conference will bring together scientists, policymakers, development professionals, and stakeholders from around the world to deliberate on key themes such as conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, climate-resilient and nutrition-sensitive agriculture, inclusive and technology-driven livelihood solutions, and the engagement of youth, women, and communities in development.

The three-day international forum will serve as a celebration of Prof. Swaminathan’s visionary leadership and a reaffirmation of collective commitment towards building a sustainable, equitable, and hunger-free world rooted in the concept of “Bio happiness.”
