The southwest monsoon is gradually retreating from northern parts of the country, while several weather systems developing over the Bay of Bengal and central India are set to bring scattered rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across many regions. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), eastern, central, and southern states are likely to see spells of moderate showers with isolated heavy rainfall, even as Delhi-NCR and parts of northwest India remain mostly clear with brief rain chances.

Southwest Monsoon Withdrawal Update

The withdrawal line of the southwest monsoon currently passes through Bhatinda, Fatehabad, Pilani, Ajmer, Deesa, Bhuj, and 23°N/68°E. Conditions are favorable for the monsoon to retreat further from parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab, along with sections of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir over the next 3–4 days.

The monsoon’s gradual withdrawal marks the transition towards post-monsoon conditions in the northern plains. Meanwhile, other parts of the country continue to receive isolated rains due to active weather systems.

Active Weather Systems Across India

Several weather systems are influencing India’s weather patterns this week:

  • North Andaman Sea & Myanmar Coast: An upper air cyclonic circulation is moving north-northwestwards and is expected to reach the North Bay of Bengal by 22nd September 2025.

  • Bay of Bengal: A fresh low-pressure area is likely to form off the Myanmar-Bangladesh coast around 25th September.

  • Troughs: East-west and north-south troughs over Uttar Pradesh, Marathwada, and central India are contributing to localized rain and thunderstorms.

  • Western Disturbance: A mid-tropospheric trough is active along longitude 70°E north of latitude 31°N, affecting northwest India.

These systems are expected to bring variable rainfall and strong winds across several regions over the next few days.

Rainfall Forecast for East and Central India
