According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the southwest monsoon is advancing towards some parts of Central Maharashtra and Vidarbha region and is expected to hit Mumbai around June 13-14.
The weatherman has predicted heavy rainfall in Mumbai on Saturday.
Meanwhile, an integrated Flood Warning System for Mumbai cited as I-FLOWS Mumbai, jointly developed by IMD, National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR) Chennai, Indian Institute Of Tropical Meteorology(IITM) Pune and NCMRWF for Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) under the guidance of Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) was launched by Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray today via video conference.
I-FLOWS Mumbai is developed as a state of art Integrate flood warning system that will be able to relay alerts of possible flood-prone areas anywhere between six to 72 hours in advance.
RMC Mumbai will be able to provide more effective impact-based forecast in advance for Mumbai and around especially during very heavy or extremely heavy rainfall and other severe weather events like cyclones etc likely to be in Mumbai.
According to IMD, the southwest Monsoon has further advanced into some more parts of Telangana, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and the remaining parts of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, Meghalaya and most parts of Odisha and West Bengal and entire Sikkim.
IMD stated that the conditions are becoming favourable for the distinct progress of Southwest Monsoon into some more parts of Central Arabian Sea, remaining parts of Maharashtra (including Mumbai), Odisha and West Bengal, some more parts of Chhattisgarh and some parts of south Gujarat, south Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Bihar during next 48 hours.
Mon Jan and Goa are expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall during the next 24 hours. This is due to the low-pressure area that has been created over the north coastal Andhra Pradesh and coastal Odisha.
The IMD has forecasted heavy rainfall in many areas of Maharashtra, coastal Andhra Pradesh, parts of Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Vidarbha, Assam and Meghalaya for the next two-three days.
Thundershowers are also expected over Central Maharashtra, Marathwada and Vidarbha districts over the weekend. However, the dry weather spell will continue in several parts of India, including the possibility of heatwave conditions in Rajasthan from June 13 to 16.
Fishermen have been advised to not venture into the sea as storms at a speed of 50-60 kmph are likely along the coasts of Karnataka and Maharashtra.
