Minor damage reported after cyclone ‘Titli’ crosses Orissa

The destructive cyclone ‘Titli’ uprooted trees, electric poles and destroyed hutments in Ganjam and Gajapati districts of Odisha after making landfall early this morning. So far no loss of lives was reported from any part of the state, said the representatives. The cyclone Titli brought heavy rainfall in at least three districts and caused little damage to power and communication services.

The landfall process is complete now and ‘the center of eye of cyclone Titli' lies over the land”. It further said the system is now moving towards the Gangetic West Bengal across Odisha and it will grow weaker gradually.

One hour after the landfall, Gopalpur district in Odisha reported surface wind at 126 kmph and Kalingapatanam in Andhra Pradesh recorded 56 kmph. Since cyclone Titli penetrated the land mass, several districts including Gajapati, Ganjam and Puri are getting good amount of rainfall. Director, Met Centre Bhubaneswar, H R Biswas said the ‘very severe cyclonic storm (VSCS) is being observed by the coastal Doppler Weather Radars at Gopalpur, Visakhapatnam, and Paradip.

The Odisha government had already evacuated around 3 lakh people residing in low-lying areas of the 5 coastal districts prior to the landfall. They were provided accommodation in 1,112 cyclone shelters.
