The Union Government has provided major relief to mango farmers in southern Karnataka by approving the purchase of up to 2.5 lakh metric tonnes of mangoes at Rs 1,616 per quintal under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) for the 2025–26 marketing season. The move follows an appeal made by Union Minister and former Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy to Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, requesting immediate support for farmers facing severe losses due to a sharp decline in mango prices. Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda also raised the issue with both Chouhan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Acting swiftly, the Ministry of Agriculture responded on June 24 by approving the procurement plan. The initiative aims to stabilise mango prices and provide fair returns to growers, especially those hit hard by market volatility.
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan confirmed the decision in a letter to Kumaraswamy, stating,
“I would like to inform you that under the Market Intervention Scheme on mango for the marketing year 2025-26 in the state of Karnataka, the maximum quantity of 2,50,000 tonne at the rate of Rs 1,616 per quintal has been approved.”
Following the announcement, Kumaraswamy expressed his appreciation through a post on X (formerly Twitter), saying,
“My heartfelt thanks to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi avaru for the unwavering and farmer-centric commitment of his government, which has swiftly come to the aid of Karnataka’s mango growers.”
He further added,
“I express my gratitude, on behalf of Karnataka’s mango farmers, to Union Agriculture Minister Shri @ChouhanShivraj avaru for promptly announcing a support price under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS), right after I submitted a request in light of the severe distress caused by the price crash.”
“This intervention once again proves that under the leadership of Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi avaru, farmers can always count on assured and fair pricing for their produce.”
My heartfelt thanks to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi avaru for the unwavering and farmer-centric commitment of his government, which has swiftly come to the aid of Karnataka’s mango growers. 🙏

The approval of the MIS is expected to provide much-needed financial stability for mango growers and restore confidence among farmers as they prepare for the next harvesting season.
