Dr. Singh served as India’s Prime Minister for two consecutive terms from 2004 to 2014 under the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA). Known for his humility and intellect, he was instrumental in implementing landmark policies like the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and the Right to Information Act, enhancing transparency and uplifting millions of rural households.

Manmohan Singh’s tenure as Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996 under Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao marked a turning point in India’s economic history. Faced with a severe financial crisis, he spearheaded bold economic reforms, liberalizing trade and investment policies that transformed India into a globally competitive economy. His efforts earned him widespread acclaim as modern India’s economic resurgence architect.

Born on September 26, 1932, in a small village in Punjab, undivided India, Singh’s academic brilliance took him to Cambridge and Oxford, where he earned degrees in Economics. His scholarly pursuits culminated in a D. Phil in Economics and a groundbreaking book critiquing India’s trade policies. He later served as a professor at Punjab University and Delhi School of Economics before starting a distinguished career in public administration.

Dr. Singh held pivotal roles, including Chief Economic Advisor, RBI Governor, and Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission. His contributions extended to representing India at international forums such as the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting and the World Conference on Human Rights.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed heartfelt condolences, stating, “India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders. Rising from humble origins, Dr. Manmohan Singh became a respected economist and left an indelible mark on our economic policy and governance.”
