The Government of Maharashtra has launched the 'Chief Minister Baliraja Free Electricity Scheme 2024' for the farmers employing agri-pumps with a capacity of 7500 horsepower to receive free electricity. The initiative comes with a hefty price tag, with the government allocating a substantial Rs 14,760 crore for power tariff waivers and concessions.

Is this Scheme a Lifeline for Farmers?

Maharashtra boasts a significant agricultural sector, with 4.741 million farmers relying on electricity for their pumps. These farmers account for 30% of the state’s total electricity consumption. The government hopes that farmers can invest more in their crops and improve their livelihood by eliminating electricity costs. The scheme can be viewed as a response to growing farmer discontent, which has impacted previous election results.

Financial Implications and Political Undercurrents

Critics argue that the government’s ambitious spending plans are financially unsustainable. With a staggering Rs 14,760 crore allocated to the scheme, questions have been raised about the potential impact on other public services. Opposition parties have labeled the initiative a mere election gimmick, designed to woo voters ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.

The government maintains that the scheme is essential to support farmers and address their distress. A review of the scheme is scheduled after three years to assess its impact and determine its continuation.

The government aims to ambitiously contribute to the agricultural sector and implement various irrigation projects. The success of this ambitious scheme will be closely watched.
