The government has declared that the poor will get LPG subsidies for 12 cylinders per year, providing help to homes suffering from high inflation, including record cooking gas costs. "We will grant a subsidy of Rs 200 per gas cylinder (up to 12 cylinders) to nearly nine crore beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana," Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in a tweet on Saturday. Our mothers and sisters will benefit from this. This will result in annual revenue of roughly Rs 6,100 crore."

After the subsidy was cut off in June 2020, all users, including Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries, must now purchase LPG cylinders at market rates. In the national capital, a 14.2-kg LPG cylinder costs Rs 1,003. Following a recent government decision, Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana recipients will receive a subsidy of Rs 200 per cylinder directly paid to their bank accounts, bringing their effective price to Rs 803 per 14.2-kg cylinder.
According to the PMUY's website, around 9.17 crore LPG connections had been granted under the scheme as of April 25.
Adult women belonging to SC households, ST households, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin), most-backward classes, Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY), tea and ex-tea garden tribes, forest dwellers, people residing in islands and river islands, SECC households (AHL TIN), poor households are eligible to get an LPG connection under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. The applicant must be over the age of eighteen. In the same residence, there should be no other LPG connections.
Prices of various items have been rising in India, pushing retail inflation to an eight-year high. The Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based inflation rate, which the RBI uses as a benchmark when deciding on monetary policy, hit an eight-year high of 7.79 percent in April 2022.
In April 2021, it was 4.23 percent, and in March 2022, it was 6.97 percent. Inflation in the food basket increased to 8.38 percent in April, up from 7.68 percent the month before and 1.96 percent a year ago.
