Cyclone Phethai made a landfall at Katrenikona in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh today after 12:30. Heavy rains and winds were experienced in many areas in the district. The entire region of Konaseema received heavy rainfall in the coastal districts of the state (ANI). Cyclone 'Phethai' made landfall at 80-100 kilometre per hour in East Godavari district. One person was killed in Vijaywada due to landslide in heavy rain, said sources in the state disaster management authorities.
Life was crippled in East Godavari, Guntur, Krishna, Vizianagram, Visakhapatnam and Vijaywada due to very heavy rain and high winds.
A runway was shut at the Vishakapatnam airport after cyclone Phethai made a landfall in Andhra Pradesh on Monday, reported Mirror Now.
Today morning, some of the early flights were diverted to Hyderabad due to cyclone Phethai, Indigo cancelled its 10:40 am departure from Hyderabad to Vizag. Indigo tweeted early morning, "Hopefully by evening things may get sorted out.”
Several other flights to the Vizag airport were cancelled as well.
Yesterday a flight from Mumbai to the port city was diverted to Hyderabad owing to bad weather.
The state government urged the people to be indoors and said that the cyclone had weakened before making landfall near Katrenikona. Schools and colleges were closed as a precautionary measure in the coastal districts today.
The government has urged the people to be careful. State home minister is personally monitoring the situation.
