Biodiversity or Biological Diversity refers to the different lifeforms that exist on the planet. We humans, with animals, trees and microorganisms are part of this biodiversity. Every continent, every country has different type of life forms and they depend on each other they co-exist. If one of them becomes stronger it may be at the cost of other species and if one of them becomes weaker or extinct it may damage the equilibrium that exists because of this biodiversity.
At the moment it is believed that 99 percent of the species that existed on this planet are no more. There were about 5 billion of them but now they are no more. This has turned this heaven that is our earth into hell. Chopping up of trees, pollution from manufacturing units, from our vehicles, from domestic activities hurts and damages the biological diversity that exists on the planet, by affecting humans, animals and trees. Most of the species are concentrated on particular zones in the planet. Tropics is where most of the remaining species are, in the forests. Fish populations are also concentrated around certain areas of the 7 oceans.
To keep the above factors in mind and to increase the awareness about the importance of biological diversity UN announced 22nd May as the International Day for Biological Diversity, in 2000. From 1993 to year 2000 it was celebrated on 29th December.
This day reminds us of the need to live in an environment friendly way, not to harm our partners the animals, the trees in any way by our direct or indirect activities. Every year UN decides upon one biodiversity theme. Theme in 2000 was "Dedicated to forest biodiversity", theme in 2020 was "Our solutions are in nature" and the theme this year is "We're part of the solution #ForNature".
