Today, May 1, 2025, is Labour Day, also known as International Workers’ Day or May Day. This day is celebrated every year to honour the hard work and contributions of workers. In India, it is also the day when Maharashtra celebrates Maharashtra Day, marking the formation of the state in 1960.

Because of these important observances, several services across the country are affected. Some places will be open, while others will remain closed.

Banks

Banks are closed today in many cities and states due to the Labour Day holiday. In states where Maharashtra Day is observed, banks are also shut. Some of the cities where banks are closed include:

  • Mumbai

  • Bengaluru

  • Chennai

  • Hyderabad

  • Kolkata

  • Nagpur

  • Patna

  • Kochi

  • Guwahati

  • Raipur

  • Belapur

  • Thiruvananthapuram

  • Imphal

  • Panaji

While bank branches are closed, online banking services like ATMs, mobile apps, net banking, and UPI are working normally.

Schools and Government Offices

Most government offices and schools are closed today in states where Labour Day is a public holiday. In Maharashtra, schools and government offices are also closed for Maharashtra Day.

In other states, whether institutions are open or closed depends on the local holiday list. Many private companies may also give their staff the day off or a half day to mark the occasion.

Liquor Shops

In Maharashtra, liquor shops are closed today because the state has declared a “dry day” on Maharashtra Day. On dry days, alcohol sales are banned across the state.

In other states, liquor shops may stay open, but this depends on local rules.

Stock Markets

Both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) are closed today. This is because Maharashtra Day is listed as an official trading holiday. There will be no trading in stocks, derivatives, or currency markets today. Regular trading will start again on the next working day.

Public Transport and Essential Services

Hospitals, clinics, ambulances, and emergency services are working as usual. Public transport like buses, trains, autos, and taxis are also operating normally in most cities.

However, people might see fewer buses on some routes or delays due to the holiday.

What is Labour Day?

Labour Day is celebrated across the world on May 1 to honour workers and their rights. It started as a movement to support fair working hours and better working conditions. In India, the first Labour Day was celebrated in Chennai in 1923.

Today, it is observed as a public holiday in several Indian states, especially those with a strong history of labour movements.

What is Maharashtra Day?

Maharashtra Day celebrates the formation of the state of Maharashtra. On May 1, 1960, the state was officially created when the old Bombay State was divided into Maharashtra and Gujarat.

The day is marked with parades, flag hoisting, and cultural events. Government offices in Maharashtra hold official functions, and citizens celebrate with pride.

If you plan to visit a place or run errands today, it's best to check locally first. While it is a holiday for many, services like medical care, transport, and online transactions are still available to help people carry on with their daily needs.
