In India, though a large part of the population depends on plastic for their daily use, nearly one-third of it is not disposed off properly and ends up clogging drains and choking the environment. According to a Central Pollution Control Board (2015-16) report, the estimated plastic waste generation per annum in our country is 15, 89,418 tonnes.

Every year, June 5 is observed as World Environment Day and it is organised around a certain theme which aims to draw attention to a particular pressing environmental concern and this time it is ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ – to reduce as much plastic use as possible and create a worldwide movement to clean up the planet. India is the host country to this year’s official celebration. Through this day, UN is making an effort to urge governments, industries, communities and people to unite in the fight against plastic and explore alternatives that are sustainable.
