Kisan Diwas or Farmers’ Day is celebrated every year on 23 December, which is the birth anniversary of Choudhary Charan Singh, the fifth Prime Minister of India also known as Messiah of farmers, as he was committed to the wellbeing of farmers. During his service as a Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and Finance Minister at the Center, he made the budget keeping villages and farmers in the priority list.
Choudhary Charan Singh believed that farmer is the root of Nation, and should be treated with gratitude and must get the reward of his labor.
History of Kisan Diwas
Kisan Diwas is celebrated in the honour of Choudhary Charan Singh who served the nation as a Prime Minister for a very short span of time. Singh’s captivating personality and various beneficial policies in the favour of farmers united all the farmers of India against the landlords and Dhanis. He followed the famous slogan Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan, given by the second Prime Minister of India, Lal Bahadur Shastri.
Along with this, Singh was a very successful writer and wrote several books, which reflects his views on farmers and their problems. He had put a lot of efforts to improve the lives of farmers.
Significance of Kisan Diwas
Nearly 70% of the Indian population depends on income generated through farming. Moreover, India is a witness to the interesting agricultural journey. The Green Revolution during the 60s developed in Punjab and Haryana changed the agricultural picture of the country. This increased the productivity, and thus India became self-sufficient in various agricultural commodities.
So, Government of India in 2001 decided to celebrate 23rd December as the National Farmers’ Day or Kisan Diwas, in the honour of farmers, the backbone of the India and Choudhary Charan Singh to spread awareness about the farmers’ issues and taking important measures for them.
