India is well known across the Globe as an Agricultural superpower and this would definitely not have been possible without our farmers, whom we also call Annadatta. It is the farmers in the country who work day and night to provide us with our daily food.
Why We Celebrate Kisan Diwas?
Kisan Diwas (National Farmers Day) is celebrated in India on December 23 every year to honour our farmers and to thank them for all their services.
In 1965, when India was attacked by Pakistan and had a huge shortage of food grains our second Prime Minister Lal Bhadur Shastri came up with a slogan “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan”, which aimed to boost the morale of our soldiers and farmers.
The farmers provided us food at that time, and are still providing us with grains when the world is suffering from a global food security. Whenever the country's GDP is down, it is the farmers who maintain a balance and ensure that no one suffers.
This shows that how much we owe our farmers and how much we should cherish them.
Why December 23 is Celebrated as Kisan Diwas?
December 23 was selected to celebrate Kisan Diwas as it is also the birthday of the 5th Prime Minister of India, Choudhary Charan Singh, who was a farmer's leader and also instrumental in developing several programmes to enhance the lives of Indian farmers.
During his tenure as Prime Minister of India from July 1979 to January 1980, Chaudhary Charan Singh played a pivotal role in the Indian agriculture sector, crafting and enforcing various farmer's bills. The motto of India's second Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shashtri, was adopted by him.
As a result, he was known as popular Kisan's Leader. It's crucial to remember that, despite being the most impactful sector that mitigates peoples basic need for food, only a few people are aware of the issues that farmers face. People lack the necessary information regarding the Annadattas.
Hence Kisan Diwas festivities focus on educating people about these issues as well as encouraging farmers to learn new facts about the farming business.
