Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan presided over a meeting of the State Disaster Management Authority, emphasized the importance of thorough inspections of preparedness measures in districts, particularly during the first weeks of June, July, August, and September. He directed that these sessions be led by district in-charge ministers or collectors.
Given the unpredictable nature of rainfall, the Chief Minister stressed the importance of anticipating potential waterlogging in urban areas and taking necessary precautions. He urged officials to clean drainage systems and ensure the smooth flow of water. Additionally, CM Vijayan called for the establishment of a dedicated monitoring system in all districts to oversee these efforts.
Kochi, Kozhikode, and Thiruvananthapuram being highly susceptible to waterlogging during heavy rains, require special attention. CM Vijayan recommended the continuation of initiatives like Operation Breakthrough and Operation Ananta to address potential issues in these areas. It was also emphasized that the current condition of these initiatives should be evaluated, and emergency measures should be implemented accordingly.
To ensure the safety of road users, CM Vijayan instructed the placement of safety boards at work sites and the prompt filling of potholes on roads. Moreover, he stressed the importance of providing basic facilities, including toilets and electricity, in camps established during emergencies. Information regarding buildings suitable for conversion into camps should be disseminated through local government offices and public spaces.
Recognizing the vulnerability of hilly regions to landslides, CM Vijayan emphasized the need for an extensive awareness campaign and training for residents in these areas. He further called for the installation of hazard warnings at tourist destinations to ensure the safety of visitors.
The meeting, attended by Vice Chairman of the State Disaster Management Authority and Revenue Minister K. Rajan, Agriculture Minister P. Prasad, Chief Secretary V. P. Joy, District Collectors, and various other state officials, aimed to enhance preparedness and response mechanisms ahead of the monsoon season.
