Climatic Conditions and Geography of the place has profound effects on the agriculture produce cultivated. The peculiarity of the soil and the farming methods, contribute to the peculiarities of the product and this can be felt in its taste shape, colour and flavor.
We could make out these distinctive qualities in the product and same is the case with industrial products, handicrafts etc.
An industrial product also acquires a peculiar quality owing to different production techniques, and availability of raw materials in the pace and production techniques that are traditionally inherited. Same is the case with handicrafts. This identifying with Geography is called Geographical indication and is an approval bestowed upon a product for its peculiar quality. If a product is considered as a geographical indication, it should bear the name of its locality/ region/country of its origin in its name.
The word Swiss in Swiss watch, or Darjeeling in the Darjeeling tea, or Alleppy in Alleppy coir are all the proper names of its place of origin.
The raw materials used in the production are linked to the product’s place of origin or the geographical location of its origin.
Karnataka boasts many GI tagged products like Mysore Silk, Coffee Varieties, Mysore Sandal Soap, Mysore Sandalwood oil, Channapatna toys, Dolls, Bidriware, Sandur Lambani Embroidery among many others. Karnataka Boasts of 46 GI registrations and $ GI logos, the maximum share constituting 12.43 percent to India total tally of 370 GI Products.
Through the Visvesvaraya Trade Promotion Centre (VTPC) and C and I Dept, Karnataka is also the first State to release and Exclusive Gi Policy.
VTPC is trying to promote the rich array of the States GI range by displaying some of them at the Jayamahal Palace, Bangalore upto 7 September.
