Justice NV Ramana, the first-generation lawyer from Agriculture background to take oath as Chief Justice of India on 24 April

Justice NV Ramana was on 6 April 2021 appointed as the 48th Chief Justice of India (CJI) by President Ram Nath Kovind.

President Ram Nath Kovind has appointed Justice NV Ramana as the next or 48th Chief Justice of India (CJI). As per media reports, Justice Ramana will take oath on 24th April 2021. Outgoing Chief Justice of India SA Bobde, who will retire on 23rd April, had recommended Justice Ramana as his successor last month.  

Justice Ramana who was born in an agricultural family in Andhra Pradesh's Krishna district on 27th August 1957 will be India’s top judge till 26 August 2022 (one year and four month).

It is important to mention that he will be the 2nd Chief Justice of India from Andhra Pradesh. Justice K Subba Rao was the 9th Chief Justice of India (1966 to 1967). Justice Ramana, in his almost four-decade-long career has practiced in the High Court of Andhra Pradesh, Central & Andhra Pradesh Administrative Tribunals & the Supreme Court of India in civil, criminal, constitutional, labour, service & election matters.

Justice Ramana specializes in constitutional, criminal, service & inter-state river laws," according to his profile on the official website of the Supreme Court. He was appointed as a permanent Judge of Andhra Pradesh High Court on 27th June 2000. He has also worked as the acting Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court from 10th March 2013 to 20th May 2013, as per the website.  

Justice Ramana was appointed as the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court in 2013 and later as a judge in the top court in 2014. He was also part of a bench that ruled that suspension of Internet in Jammu & Kashmir must be reviewed immediately. Besides, he was part of the panel of judges which held that the Chief Justice's office comes under the ambit of the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
