ITR Filing Deadline for AY 2025-26 Extended to 15 September 2025 from 31 July

The government has given taxpayers more time to file their returns because of changes in the ITR forms and systems. This will help avoid last-minute rush and make the filing process easier and more accurate.

Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26. The original submission deadline of July 31, 2025, has now been moved to September 15, 2025.

According to an official press release dated May 27, 2025, this extension is due to significant structural and content revisions made to the ITR forms for AY 2025-26. These updated forms are designed to simplify compliance, improve transparency, and ensure more accurate reporting. However, implementing these changes has required additional time for system development, integration, and testing of the related digital tools.

Additionally, Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) credits, which must be submitted by May 31, 2025, are expected to start reflecting only in early June. This delay would significantly shorten the effective filing window, making it challenging for taxpayers to file their returns accurately and on time without an extension.

In the official statement, the CBDT noted,“In light of these extensive changes and the time required for full system readiness, we have decided to extend the due date for filing returns.”

The CBDT emphasized that this extension aims to provide a smooth and convenient filing experience for taxpayers by allowing enough time to adapt to the revised ITR formats and utilize the updated filing systems. A formal notification regarding this decision will be issued separately.

This move is expected to address concerns raised by stakeholders about the tight timelines and to provide sufficient time for taxpayers to comply, thereby ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the ITR filing process.
