Speaking at the Rabi Conference 2025-26, which began on September 15 at Pusa, New Delhi, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan reaffirmed the government's commitment to farmer welfare. Highlighting the conference theme- “One Nation – One Agriculture – One Team” - he stressed the importance of unified efforts between the Centre, states, scientists, and agricultural stakeholders to transform the country's agricultural landscape.
"We are not ordinary people- we have the privilege and responsibility of shaping the future of half of the country's population. Our work must be marked by dedication and genuine concern for the upliftment of our farmers," he said.
Chouhan addressed the ongoing issue of counterfeit agricultural inputs, including fertilisers, seeds, and pesticides. He warned that strict measures would be taken against those found guilty of selling spurious products. Only those biostimulants that meet defined quality benchmarks will be permitted for sale, he stated.
Reiterating the importance of agricultural extension services, the minister urged all stakeholders- including central and state agriculture departments, agricultural universities, and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs)- to formulate concrete action plans and deliver results on the ground. "Our sole focus is on agriculture and the farmer. Every officer must bring value to their role," he emphasized.
In light of the increasing unpredictability of weather patterns, Chouhan also called for greater enrollment of farmers under crop insurance schemes. He urged officials to ensure the effective implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana so that affected farmers receive timely relief. He also announced that the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan will be relaunched in October with joint participation from both the Centre and states.
"Agricultural research should now be oriented toward solving real-world problems faced by farmers, not just academic pursuits," he said. In regions affected by floods, he directed the administration to act swiftly and provide immediate assistance.
Union Agriculture Secretary Dr. Devesh Chaturvedi, in his opening remarks, shared that the conference includes six parallel breakout sessions aimed at addressing various facets of the upcoming Rabi season. Director General of ICAR, Dr. M. L. Jat, and Rajasthan Agriculture Minister Dr. Kirodi Lal Meena also shared their insights during the inaugural session.
The conference is being attended by senior officials from the central and state governments, ICAR scientists, agricultural experts, farmer representatives, and other key stakeholders. It serves as a collaborative platform to review preparations and set production goals for the Rabi 2025-26 cropping season.
