India Won’t Compromise Farmers or Artisans Interests: Shivraj Singh Chouhan Reaffirms PM Modi’s Swadeshi Vision on National Handloom Day

He reaffirmed PM Modi’s Swadeshi vision, emphasizing that the nation will never compromise the interests of farmers, artisans, or small entrepreneurs.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday, August 7, 2025. marked National Handloom Day with a virtual interaction with lakhs of women from Self Help Groups (SHGs) across the country. Speaking from Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi, Minister Chouhan hailed the contribution of SHG women in preserving India’s local arts and promoting self-reliance.

“Women are the embodiment of strength and creativity. Handloom is not just a craft, it is a symbol of self-reliance and was once a powerful tool in India’s non-violent freedom movement,” he said, adding that Indian weavers have earned recognition globally for their remarkable skills since ancient times.

During the event, Chouhan acknowledged concerns raised by SHG women regarding marketing and branding. He assured that the government would work seriously on these issues and said that steps will be taken to provide training in design and innovation based on market demand.

“Quality is key to staying competitive. I urge all SHG members to always maintain the highest standards in their products,” he said.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strong support for indigenous products, Chouhan reiterated that no agreement with any country will ever come at the cost of Indian farmers, artisans, or small entrepreneurs. “National interest is supreme. Even if it causes personal loss, the Prime Minister has made it clear that the country’s interest will never be compromised. India will stand tall with self-respect and ensure the protection of its citizens’ interests,” he added.

The minister called on citizens to adopt the ‘Vocal for Local’ approach, especially during festivals like Raksha Bandhan and other upcoming celebrations. “Let us convert our population into strength by choosing India-made products during this festive season,” he urged.

Chouhan expressed satisfaction over the growing number of 'Lakhpati Didis', SHG members earning over Rs 1 lakh annually, under the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM). So far, over 1.5 crore women have reached this milestone, and the mission aims to empower up to 3 crore women soon.

The event also featured SHG women displaying their handloom products at stalls, which Minister Chouhan personally visited and appreciated. Many members also shared how the NRLM has not only provided economic stability but also enhanced their social standing.

Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, Rural Development Secretary Shailesh Kumar Singh, and other senior officials were also present.
