Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Parshottam Rupala, unveiled the Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics 2023, focusing on milk, egg, meat, and wool production for the fiscal year 2022-23. The statistics were derived from the Animal Integrated Sample Survey conducted from March 2022 to February 2023, presented during the National Milk Day event.
Milk Production:
Minister Rupala highlighted that India's total milk production for the year 2022-23 reached an estimated 230.58 million tonnes, marking a remarkable growth of 22.81% over the past five years. This surge is particularly significant compared to the 2018-19 production of 187.75 million tonnes.
The annual growth rate for 2022-23 stands at 3.83%, demonstrating a consistent upward trend. Uttar Pradesh leads the states in milk production, contributing 15.72%, followed by Rajasthan (14.44%), Madhya Pradesh (8.73%), Gujarat (7.49%), and Andhra Pradesh (6.70%). Karnataka recorded the highest annual growth rate at 8.76%.
Egg Production:
The total egg production in the country for 2022-23 is reported at 138.38 billion, showcasing an impressive growth of 33.31% over the last five years. Compared to the 2018-19 figure of 103.80 billion, this marks a substantial increase.
The annual growth rate for 2022-23 is 6.77%. Andhra Pradesh is the leading contributor, accounting for 20.13% of the total egg production, followed by Tamil Nadu (15.58%), Telangana (12.77%), West Bengal (9.94%), and Karnataka (6.51%). West Bengal boasts the highest annual growth rate at 20.10%.
Meat Production:
Union Minister Rupala reported that the total meat production in the country for 2022-23 stands at 9.77 million tonnes, reflecting a commendable growth of 20.39% over the past five years. This is compared to the 2018-19 estimate of 8.11 million tonnes.
The annual growth rate for 2022-23 is 5.13%. Uttar Pradesh dominates in meat production with a 12.20% share, followed by West Bengal (11.93%), Maharashtra (11.50%), Andhra Pradesh (11.20%), and Telangana (11.06%). Sikkim leads in annual growth rate at an impressive 63.08%.
Wool Production:
Minister Rupala noted that the total wool production in the country for 2022-23 is estimated at 33.61 million kg, experiencing a negative growth of 16.84% over the past five years. However, there is a slight increase of 2.12% in 2022-23 compared to the previous fiscal year.
Rajasthan contributes the most to wool production with a share of 47.98%, followed by Jammu & Kashmir (22.55%), Gujarat (6.01%), Maharashtra (4.73%), and Himachal Pradesh (4.27%). Arunachal Pradesh leads in annual growth rate at 35.75%.
These statistics signify the robust growth of the livestock sector in India, showcasing the country's increasing self-sufficiency in meeting the demands for milk, eggs, meat, and wool.
