India continues its upward trajectory in the realm of innovation, securing the 40th position out of 132 economies in the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2023 rankings released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). This achievement reflects the nation's commitment to fostering innovation and highlights its potential as a global innovation hub.

Over the past several years, India has made remarkable progress in the GII rankings, steadily climbing from the 81st position in 2015 to the 40th position in 2023. This remarkable ascent underscores the country's dedication to innovation, a crucial element in overcoming the unprecedented challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic, and aligns with the vision of an "Atma Nirbhar Bharat" or self-reliant India championed by the Prime Minister.

Government departments, including the Department of Science and Technology, the Department of Biotechnology, the Department of Space, and the Department of Atomic Energy, and entities such as the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the Department of Telecommunications, the Department of Agricultural Research & Education, and the Department of Health Research have played pivotal roles in enriching the National Innovation Ecosystem. The Atal Innovation Mission has also significantly contributed to expanding this ecosystem.

NITI Aayog, the National Institution for Transforming India, has been instrumental in channeling national efforts toward policy-led innovation in various domains, including electric vehicles, biotechnology, nanotechnology, space, and alternative energy sources. It has also worked tirelessly to foster innovation at the state and district levels. NITI Aayog's continuous monitoring and evaluation have been crucial in assessing India's position in global rankings, including the GII.

The Global Innovation Index serves as a reliable tool for governments worldwide to evaluate the impact of innovation on their respective societies and economies. Over the years, the GII has become an essential policy instrument for governments, aiding them in reflecting on their current innovation landscape and making informed decisions for the future.

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has been a valuable partner in India's journey toward becoming an innovation-driven economy. This year, in collaboration with the CII and WIPO, NITI Aayog will virtually host the India Launch of the GII 2023 on September 29, 2023.

The launch event will feature esteemed dignitaries, including Suman Bery, Vice-Chairman, NITI Aayog; Dr. V.K. Saraswat, Member, NITI Aayog; BVR Subrahmanyam, Chief Executive Officer, NITI Aayog; Mr. Daren Tang, Director General, WIPO; Dr. Sacha Wunsch-Vincent, Co-Editor, GII & Head, Economics and Statistics Division, WIPO, and many other.

India's continued progress in the Global Innovation Index signifies its growing importance on the global innovation stage and reinforces its commitment to driving innovation for economic growth and societal well-being.
