On Wednesday, July 16, 2025, India and Argentina made significant progress in enhancing their agricultural collaboration during the second meeting of the Joint Working Group (JWG) on Agriculture. Senior officials from both countries engaged in extensive discussions aimed at increasing cooperation in key agricultural sectors, with a particular focus on technology sharing and climate resilience.

Devesh Chaturvedi, Secretary of India’s Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, joined the meeting virtually and underlined Argentina’s importance as a strategic partner. “This partnership is built on a foundation of mutual respect and a shared vision to promote sustainable agriculture,” Chaturvedi said. He highlighted potential areas of collaboration including mechanization, pest control, climate-resilient farming, and joint research initiatives.

Co-chairing the meeting, Sergio Iraeta, Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of Argentina, echoed similar sentiments. He reaffirmed Argentina’s commitment to deepening ties with India and stressed the potential for mutual growth through genome editing, plant breeding technologies, and greater agricultural productivity. “India and Argentina, both rich in agricultural expertise, can complement each other to bring real benefits to our farmers,” he said.

The session also saw insights from Muktanand Agrawal, Joint Secretary (Plant Protection), who shared India’s recent steps in agriculture. He pointed to digital innovation, climate-adaptive practices, risk mitigation tools, and expanded credit access for farmers as some of the key government initiatives driving sectoral transformation.

The two sides explored a broad spectrum of issues including horticulture, oilseed and pulses value chains, mechanization, carbon credit frameworks for farmers, biopesticide development, locust control, new breeding technologies, and improved market access.

Officials from India’s Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, and the Ministry of External Affairs also participated in the discussions.
