India Achieves 100 GW Solar Module Manufacturing Capacity Under ALMM

India has crossed a major clean energy milestone by reaching 100 GW of solar PV module manufacturing capacity under the ALMM, a sharp rise from just 2.3 GW in 2014. The number of enlisted manufacturers has also grown from 21 in 2021 to 100, operating 123 units across the country.

India has reached a significant milestone by achieving 100 gigawatts (GW) of solar PV module manufacturing capacity listed under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM). This is a remarkable increase from just 2.3 GW in 2014.

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, called it a “historic achievement,” crediting the growth to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and initiatives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for High-Efficiency Solar Modules. “We are building a robust, self-reliant solar manufacturing ecosystem that strengthens our path towards Atmanirbhar Bharat and the target of 500 GW non-fossil capacity by 2030,” Joshi said.

The ALMM framework, introduced in January 2019, aims to promote quality standards in domestic manufacturing. When the first list was published in March 2021, India had an enlisted capacity of about 8.2 GW and just 21 manufacturers. In a little over four years, the capacity has jumped more than twelve times, with 100 manufacturers now operating 123 units across the country.

Officials said the expansion reflects the combined impact of government policy, private sector investment, and adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies. Both established companies and new entrants have embraced high-efficiency solar module designs and vertically integrated operations, making the sector more competitive globally.

Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) said these efforts align with India’s broader climate goals and its commitment to contribute to global decarbonisation. The government’s strategy has included creating a level playing field for domestic producers, offering incentives under the PLI scheme, and encouraging innovation in solar technology.

India’s growing solar manufacturing base is now seen as capable of not only meeting the country’s own renewable energy needs but also exporting to international markets. MNRE officials said the ministry will continue to work with stakeholders to strengthen the ecosystem through infrastructure development, policy support, and technology upgrades.

The achievement comes as India pushes ahead with its renewable energy targets, with the 100 GW solar manufacturing capacity milestone marking a significant step towards its 2030 goals.
