IMD Weather Update: Hot Days Ahead For Delhi, Yellow Alert in Punjab

IMD has issued a yellow alert for several districts in Punjab and Haryana from March 28 to 30.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a blend of weather conditions for Delhi in the coming days. Expect highs of 36°C and lows of 21°C, with the sky likely to remain generally cloudy. There's also a chance of very light rain or thundershowers in select areas. Wednesday saw Delhi recording its highest temperature of the year, hitting 37°C which was 4 degrees above the typical maximum temperature for this time of year.

IMD"s Predictions for Weather Across Country

Under the Influence of Cyclonic circulation, the IMD points to a cyclonic circulation over Bihar and another over south Assam, which is expected to trigger various weather phenomena across different regions. In Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya, isolated to scattered rainfall/snowfall are anticipated with isolated thunderstorms and lightning on March 28 and 29, followed by a rise in intensity from March 30 to April 3, 2024.

Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha might experience isolated light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning from March 28 to April 1. Bihar and Jharkhand may see isolated light to moderate rainfall on specific dates with thunderstorms and lightning.

The impact of Western Disturbance combined with a cyclonic circulation over northwest Rajasthan will bring the following conditions. Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand might experience fairly widespread to widespread light rainfall/snowfall with isolated thunderstorms and lightning likely from March 28 to March 31.

Yellow Alert in Punjab

Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and West Uttar Pradesh could witness isolated light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning expected. There's also a possibility of isolated hailstorms in certain areas on specific dates. A yellow alert has been issued for several districts in Punjab and Haryana, anticipating thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds at speeds of 30-40 km/h at isolated places from March 28 to 30.

Yesterday's temperatures soared in various regions, with some areas experiencing temperatures above normal by 3-4°C. Current temperatures in certain areas exceed the 95th percentile of climatological values, with expectations of continuing high temperatures in specific regions. Looking Ahead, Northwest India will see no significant changes in maximum temperatures over the next 24 hours, followed by a slight drop thereafter. Central and East India are likely to witness a gradual rise in maximum temperatures over the next two days. Heatwave conditions may occur in isolated pockets over West Madhya Pradesh, North Interior Karnataka, and Vidarbha on specific dates. As the weather remains variable, residents are advised to stay updated with the latest forecasts and take necessary precautions.
